A New Brittle Rheology and Numerical Framework for Large?Scale Sea?Ice Models

We present a new brittle rheology and an accompanying numerical framework for large-scale sea-ice modeling. This is based on Bingham-Maxwell constitutive model the Maxwell-Elasto-Brittle (MEB) rheology, latter of which has previously been used to sea ice. The key strength MEB its ability represent scaling properties simulated deformation in space time. we propose here, refer as (BBM), represents further evolution rheology. It developed address two main shortcomings implementation were unable previously: excessive thickening ice runs longer than about one winter relatively high computational cost. In BBM these are addressed by demanding that deforms under convergence purely elastic manner when internal stresses lie below given compressive threshold. Numerical performance improved introducing explicit scheme solve momentum equation. this paper, introduce framework. Using version neXtSIM (neXtSIMv2), show it gives reasonable long term Arctic cover very good fields statistics compared satellite observations.
